BELIEF IN LANDFILLS AS A PRIMARY SOLUTION TO WASTE IS A “MATRIX PROGRAM” THAT NEEDS TO BE “UNINSTALLED”

BELIEF IN LANDFILLS AS A PRIMARY SOLUTION TO WASTE IS A “MATRIX PROGRAM” THAT NEEDS TO BE “UNINSTALLED”.

The belief in landfills as a solution to municipal waste is like a matrix (mental program) that limits people’s ability to see or think beyond the status quo—the term “matrix” in this context being a metaphor drawn from the movie The Matrix, where characters are trapped in a simulated reality that shapes their perceptions and limits their understanding of the world.

Just as the characters in The Matrix are conditioned to accept a simulated reality without questioning it, people, through repeated exposure and tradition, have become accustomed to the belief that landfills should be the default solution to managing waste—despite their significant and far-reaching impacts on both the environment and public health.

This false belief discourages innovation and exploration of alternative methods that are known to be more sustainable or effective. And the belief is self-reinforcing—people believe it’s the best option because that’s what they’ve always been told and, as a result, they don't seek out or consider alternative, more progressive solutions.

In The Matrix, once characters begin to wake up to the reality of the matrix as an artificial construct, they begin to “uninstall” (much like a non-functional computer program) this ingrained belief system or mindset and choose to see the world for what it truly is.

In a similar way, the belief in landfilling needs to be “uninstalled” in order for society to embrace a more sustainable, innovative approach to waste management.

Just as The Matrix represents a false, limiting reality, the belief in landfilling represents a false, limiting solution to waste that needs to be questioned and ultimately replaced.

As the character Trinity in The Matrix says, “The answer is out there, Neo, and it’s looking for you, and it will find you if you want it to.”

Conclusion: NYS must stop renewing expired permits for mega-landfills, and eventually extend this policy to all landfills.
